Introducing the student and his project
In his final year at the University of Texas at Austin, student Shane Wurdeman is working on a project that will help people with prosthetic limbs. He has designed a new type of socket that will be easier to use and more comfortable for people with amputations.
Wurdeman’s design is inspired by the movie “Thor: Ragnarok.” In the film, Thor’s hammer is destroyed and he gets a new one made from lightning. Wurdeman thought it would be cool to make a prosthetic socket that looks like it’s made of lightning.
To create his design, Wurdeman is using 3D printing and CAD software. He has already created a prototype and is currently working on making it stronger and more comfortable to wear. He plans to test his socket on himself before giving it to anyone else.
Wurdeman hopes his design will help people with amputations feel more confident and comfortable in their own bodies. “I want them to feel like they can do anything,” he said.
